Our Trimming Pruning Services Described
We like to think that tree trimming is the silvicultural practice of removing dead, diseased or dangerous tree branches. This is done for the health of the tree and the well-being of people and property around it. Our pruning trimming services are listed below:
– professional tree trimming removal (where there’s a tree to be removed as well as another being cut)
– experienced trimming and cutting (same as above – we always take away all tree debris with us, leaving your yard clean and tidy)
– professional tree pruning (same as trimming although fruit tree pruning is more of a science, especially to stop biennial fruiting)
– tree maintenance (whilst trimming your tree, we also spot other problems //e.g. pests, disease, irrigation, fertilization and mulching challenges – these services are provided by OC TreeWorx in Orange County, CA too!)
– oak tree trimming (we trim any tree but oaks are worth mentioning because Orange County is blessed with no less than 5 native oak species: Scrub Sierra Live Oak, Mesa Oak, Scrub Oak, California Live Oak, Golden Cup Oak a.k.a. Mountain Live Oak; they should only be pruned in winter, if at all)
Not an exhaustive list of all our local services by any means, but you get the idea.
Why Is OC TreeWorx A Special Tree Service Company?
We think we’re ideally suited to look after the trees of residential, business and municipal customers in all the cities within Orange County, California. OC TreeWorx is special in the following 3 ways:
1. Customer Delight
Firstly, our customer’s satisfaction with our tree trimming service is absolutely paramount. This is because we give great results at modest costs to our clientele. Above we show just 12 of the 30 plus Five Star reviews from happy customers. There are 19 more (all) 5 star reviews on Yelp and Angie’s List.
2. Increase the $ Value of Your Trees and Property
– We can help you maximize the value of your property by offering a professional and affordable trimming service for your larger trees that always complies with ANSI A300 -2017 Pruning standards. This prioritizes the long-term health of your tree. It means your trees’ condition will only improve over time, enhancing its beauty and financial benefits for your home’s value.
The ANSI A300 2017 Pruning requirements very clearly detail acceptable pruning trimming practices that will extend the life of your tree and yet achieve beneficial cutting goals. As a mark of respect for this national standard and for the health of your tree, we aim to trim back no more than a quarter of the overall tree canopy and less than 25% of each living tree branch within any one growing season. Any more than this and the tree over-compensates for the loss of leaf cover by throwing up weak, fragile limbs which are prone to limb breakage in the next storm.
In large mature trees, the maximum percentage of the canopy that should be trimmed away should reduce from 25% to no more than 10%. This is what we do. It effectively outlaws the damaging practice of tree topping.
3. Impeccable Credentials
We have more than 20 years’ trimming expertise in southern California behind us and many more years ahead. Needless to say, we are fully insured if, heaven forbid, a mishap occurs. OC TreeWorx is Licensed & Bonded too. Our Contractor’s State License Board (CSLB) Number is CSLB 845189.
Should You Have Your Trees Trimmed Professionally?
Absolutely, yes. Let us explain why. The trees in your yard are more valuable than you think. According to USDA Forest Service, healthy mature trees will boost your home dollar value by around ten per cent. So a property without any trees and appraised at, say, $325,000 will be worth $357,500 with a few full-sized trees transplanted in the yard. The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers agree; they say that each large, healthy specimen is worth between $1,000 and $10,000 to the home-owner. Curb appeal truly sells!
From our 20 years’ experience of trimming trees the right way, these optimistic numbers only apply when the trees look healthy and are well maintained. Moneysense agrees. hey report that the ability of a tree to add significantly to a home’s resell worth is mostly reliant upon their health, condition and shape i.e. how well they are looked after.
It’s easy to see that a badly-trimmed tree will detract from a property’s maximum possible worth. So always choose an experienced tree trimmer.
How Often Should My Trees Be Trimmed?
‘A tree wound never heals, it just seals’
The good City of Santa Ana in Orange County (CA) believes trees should not be trimmed every year. In fact, their Municode mandates a 4 and a half year trimming cycle for their street trees. This is because cutting into a tree causes harm to it, regardless of the ‘beneficial’ objective.
On your own property, and for the sake of your tree’s long-term health and vigor, we recommend letting a tree pruner loose on your large trees no more than once every 3 years. Two main reasons why….
a. Reduce number of cut wounds
It seems obvious but every time a tree is trimmed, a wound is created. The exposure of living wood can allow in pests and diseases. The tree reacts to the lesion and expends energy to grow over and seal the open wound surface. BUT, for this sealing action to happen at all, the tree branch that is selected for pruning must be cut properly. If the tree branch collar is damaged, the cut surface will NEVER seal over. This is yet another reason why you should always choose an experienced qualified tree expert to trim your trees.
Trimming a tree also reduces the tree’s ability to produce the sugars it needs. Fewer branches and leaves caused by pruning mean less photosynthesis. It’s like putting your tree on a mandatory diet! Result – less sugars for growth and development of your tree.

b. Reduce weak growth
Relentless annual trimming will place your tree under unnecessary stress. Your tree will try to compensate for the loss of its branches and foliage by throwing out new growth fast. On a tree, the newly created limbs are often weak and fleshy. These possess neither the resistance to breakage nor resistance to pest infestation that the original growth had. This leads to more frequent breakage of the tree’s branches when the next strong wind blasts through your neighborhood.
Three Exceptions to the ‘3 Year Rule’
i). Palm trees – these can benefit from a moderate trim once a year and sometimes twice a year. This assumes the ANSI-A300 Pruning standards are applied e.g. no climbing spikes, no green or yellow frond removal. We explain our professional palm tree trimming service here.
ii). There are exceptions such as fruit trees which can benefit from pruning tree once a year if not more often e.g. to increase fruit production and reduce bi-annual fruiting patterns. Structural pruning a young tree can also take place annually for the first 3 years to create the ideal branch structure for longevity and better overall health.
iii). Dead and decaying branches can be removed at any time, of-course. Again, they must be removed professionally for the sake of your tree’s long-term health and for safety reasons too.

Can a Trees Trimming Company Protect You and Your Property?
If your chosen trimming contractor has full insurance coverage and has a great local reputation, then the answer is ‘yes’. OC TreeWorx values the trust of its customers a great deal. This is why we’re fully insured to eliminate any financial risk should our work go wrong, for any reason.
Protecting Your Property, Yard and Your Health
We actively protect your property and lawn from any damage when we have to use heavy equipment, for example. Our crew always wears Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Furthermore, we will respect your wish for social distancing between us to reduce the transmission of viral infection e.g. COVID-19. Cutting or pruning a large tree securely entails the professional use of either rope-based climbing equipment or hydraulic/tracked bucket machinery.
Using ladders in a tree taller than about 35 feet leads to a very high risk of severe and life-changing accidents. Contact the specialists instead. Call OC TreeWorx by clicking the blue button if you’re reading this on a mobile phone or by simply calling the telephone number mentioned.
What’s the Difference Between Trimming and Pruning A Tree?
Everyone has his own trimming and pruning definitions and some of the differences you read about are small and artificial. As the terms are very similar they are used interchangeably even within the tree industry.
Scientifically, there are differences between the two terms to prune and to trim. This article on Wikipedia explains tree pruning in more detail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruning
The Wikipedia article also explains classical trimming techniques such as crown reduction, canopy lifting, vista pruning ad structural pruning.
It’s clear that tree pruning is more of an organized, scheduled method of tree care than simple deadwood trimming. Pruning includes surgical cuts at particular areas on the tree and also at particular times of the calendar year. For example, fruit trees should be pruned every year to help prevent biennial pruning and boost both fruit volumes and quality.
Should I Trim A Tree Myself?
There is nothing stopping you from buying some trimming tools, climbing a ladder and cutting your tree yourself with your newly acquired tree trimmers. However, a litany of tree service accidents reported weekly by the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) should give you pause for thought. Tree work is one of USA’s most dangerous professions. Check out YouTube for graphic proof. Have a higher regard for your personal safety and call us to do the work. We might even save you from serious injury as well saving your tree!
